Journey to El Ciudad de Corona, Pageant Land - Part 1 : The Reigning Crowns

Pageant season is just around the corner and we are super excited for the crazy adrenaline rush like every year. While we pretend to 'patiently' wait for the festivities to begin, let us go roam around a bit in our little pageant land.

Every pageant has a distinguishing feature that symbolises and defines it. Whether it be Miss World's Beauty With a Purpose or Miss Grand's Host Country themed night, every pageant has something unique that makes it stand out. And one such symbol is its crown. We're now entering the city of crowns or El Ciudad De Corona - Tajpur. You're allowed to look, but do not touch, they are very expensive!

Our first attraction at Tajpur is the iconic blue crown of Miss World. Created back in 1969 by David Morris, an English jeweller, this royal crown is the longest reigning crown that pageantry has ever seen. It was gifted to the Morleys and the Miss World organisation by the late queen Elizabeth II, and has been a symbol for charity and service since. The crown made its first appearance at the Miss World 1972 finale, when it was bestowed on the head of the winning queen - Belinda Green of Australia.

Its reign as Miss World's crown was short-lived however as we got to see a new crown being used for Miss World 1973's crowning. We didn't get to see the iconic blue crown for the next five editions! However, in 1979 the Miss World organisation decided to bring back the blue crown and it has reigned supreme since then. Worth around $750,000 this crown is entrusted with diamonds and blue and turquoise precious stones. It is often regarded as the most beautiful pageant crown that exists. Uff! It doesn't get any more regal than this, now does it? 😍

As we walk further, here comes the brand new, in fact, the newest in town - Force For Good - Miss Universe Crown by Mouawad. The reigning crown of Miss Universe - Power Of Unity was also designed by Mouawad, and this new crown is the symbolic representation of their new era - The JKN era. An era that promises empowerment, fighting for the rights of the LGBTQ community and the upliftment of women all across the globe. This crown is designed to represent the motto of the new era of Miss Universe - the belief and the vision that the future of the world lies in the hands of its women and will thus be shaped by them. It is meant to symbolise Miss Universe Organisation’s advocacy of emancipation of talented women, who strive to bring out a positive change in the universe. Speaking of the crown, the CEO of JKN global group and now the owner of the Miss Universe Organisation said that the force for good crown symbolises women empowerment as it represents an organisation run by women, and owned by a transwoman.

The crown is shaped like the waves of the ocean and is handmade using 993 gems! It also studded with 110.84 carat sapphires and 48.24 carat of diamonds. The crowns estimated worth is 6 million USD and the winner of the 71st edition of the Miss Universe contest shall be the first woman to ever wear it.

Whew! Who doesn't love new crowns? Speaking of new crowns, what is this, right here? Another new crown? Yes, your new Miss International Crown!

First worn by the longest reigning queen - Bint on the crown revealing press conference - 5th November, this crown is designed by the partnership of the Miss International Organisation and Long Beach Pearl. The inspiration behind the design of the crown is Sakura, which is also selected as the theme for the new symbol of Miss International. The sakura theme is a symbolic representation of Japan’s famous cherry blossom season, the beauty of which is appreciated all over the world by all nationalities. The crown is made up of 333 pure white pearls that are meant to personify good luck and survival. In addition to the white pearls, the crown is also studded with 1960 white gems that are supposed to symbolise the first ever edition of Miss International, held back in the year 1960. We can tell a lot of thought went into the making of this crown!

Moving forward, what do we have here? The remaining four veteran crowns of the pageant world - We are now entering the court of Miss Earth! This is the legendary Miss Earth crown that the main winner, the ultimate queen gets to wear on her coronation. One of the most inspiring things about this piece of beauty is that it was made with Miss Earth’s vision in mind. The gems used in this crown have been donated from the countries participating in the contest every year to signify unity and common goal of saving the planet earth. The gold and silver used in the making  of the crown is 100% recycled to reduce the environmental effects that mining has. The idea behind the design of the crown as stated by the organisation is - “the earth laughs in flowers” - hence the floral theme.

The three elemental crowns are the exact replicas of each other, with just a variation in the colours. The Miss Earth crown was first worn by Larissa Ramos of Brazil on her coronation night as the new Miss Earth on 22nd November 2009. The current elemental crowns however began their pageant journey only in 2013!

Who do we have next? Yet another new resident in this city - the new Miss Supranational Crown.

Ricardo Patraca - the Mexican jeweller and designer - created this wonderful masterpiece for the 13th edition of Miss Supranational Pageant. Being only the second crown in the line of succession of Supra crowns, this blue beauty received mixed reactions from the pageant fans. According to Ricardo, the crown is a symbolic representation of Miss Suppranational’s motto - Inspirational Aspirational and is meant to represent the bond of friendship that defies borders. The upper design of the crown represents the inspirational message of the supranational organisation while the side of the crown has ribbon shaped designs that are used to signify the different social causes that the miss supranational organisation undertakes. The blue stone is supposed to symbolise the supra family and is an inspiration from the first, iconic Miss Supranational crown. The first ever beauty queen to be crowned with this crown is Lalena Mswane of South Africa, who is our reigning Miss Supranational 2022!

Journey to El Ciudad de Corona, Pageant Land - Part 1 : The Reigning Crowns

One of the most beautiful crowns in this part of Tajpur indeed! Designer and jeweller George Wittels designed this marvel as a token of celebration. A festival to mark the completion of ten successful editions of the Miss Grand pageant. Being the fourth crown of the youngest Big 6 pageant, the reign of this crown is also short lived as the organisation has announced that it will be used only for MGI’22, MGI’23 and MGI’24 editions of the annual contest.

That was quite a field trip, now wasn’t it? Let's take a break and we will soon resume our visit to this beautiful city of Tajpur and look at the other tourist spots awaiting us! Be back soon
